New Delhi, June 17 (NationPress) Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi expressed appreciation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the ceasefire line in the historic city of Nicosia during his trip to Cyprus on Monday. Singhvi characterized the visit as a positive move and a long-overdue demonstration of solidarity.
In a post on X, he stated, "A commendable action by PM Modi to acknowledge the illegally occupied territories of Cyprus by Turkey. I've been advocating for this for quite some time. Though it's late, it's better than never."
"Enough is enough. Stand with Cyprus: demand sovereignty, oppose expansionism!" he further emphasized.
PM Modi's nearly 24-hour engagement in Cyprus is especially noteworthy as it coincides with heightened tensions between India and Turkey, primarily due to Turkey's ongoing support for Pakistan.
The recognition by Ankara of the so-called 'Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' in the northern region, which was captured by Turkish forces in 1974, along with disputes regarding gas exploration rights in the Eastern Mediterranean, continues to fuel discord between Turkey and Cyprus.
After PM Modi's tour along the ceasefire lines of Nicosia with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, the Government of the Republic of Cyprus shared on X, "Tour with Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi along the ceasefire line in old Nicosia. The signs of Turkish occupation remain evident."
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that both leaders walked through the historic core of Nicosia—a city that stands resilient and firm in its progress, symbolizing the indomitable spirit of Cyprus's proud populace.
PM Modi's visit from June 15 to 16 marked a significant milestone, being the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over twenty years, greatly enhancing the bilateral ties between New Delhi and Nicosia—a vital partner in the Mediterranean and the European Union.
"Cyprus is a dependable and secure ally of India in a region of considerable geostrategic importance, like the Eastern Mediterranean and the broader Middle East. Additionally, it is a Member State of the European Union (EU), acting as India's gateway to Europe. In light of Cyprus's upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU beginning January 1, 2026, we are committed to further strengthening India's strategic relations with the EU," said Christodoulides.
'I also wish to express gratitude for your enduring support regarding the Cyprus issue and our collective efforts to end the Turkish occupation and reunify our homeland. Moreover, I want to express the Republic of Cyprus's backing for your initiatives against both international and cross-border terrorism,' he added.
