Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 4 (NationPress) — Prominent leaders from both the Central and state Congress convened at the party's Kerala headquarters on Wednesday for a cake-cutting event celebrating the 63rd birthday of General Secretary, Organisation, K.C. Venugopal.

Although Venugopal was not present, the gathering featured nearly all senior state Congress figures and several leaders from outside, highlighting the significant influence he holds within the party, as well as commemorating his five decades of public service.

The occasion was attended by Congress Screening Committee Chairman Madhusudan Mistry, state Congress President Sunny Joseph, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, Congress Working Committee member Ramesh Chennithala, and General Secretary Deepa Dasmunshi, among others, giving the event a distinct political tone rather than merely a customary celebration.

Venugopal's ascent has been neither sudden nor coincidental. A product of the Congress student movement, he gained political experience in the Kerala Students Union before leading both the KSU and the Indian Youth Congress at the state level.

His organizational skills led to electoral triumphs as he entered the Kerala Assembly from Alappuzha in 1996, successfully retaining his seat in 2001 and 2006.

As the Minister for Devaswom and Tourism in the Oommen Chandy administration from 2004 to 2006, he solidified his administrative reputation.

In 2009, he transitioned to national politics by winning the Alappuzha Lok Sabha seat, later serving as Minister of State in the second UPA government from 2011 to 2014.

Although he opted out of the 2019 general election—a decision that coincided with Congress losing Alappuzha to the CPI-M—his relevance within the party only intensified.

His election to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan in 2020 and subsequent appointment as General Secretary overseeing organization positioned him at the core of the Congress’s revitalization efforts.

His anticipated return to Parliament in 2024, reclaiming Alappuzha for a third time, marked a complete political journey.

This birthday celebration in Thiruvananthapuram, notably held without Venugopal, served as a testament to his enduring influence, extending far beyond his physical presence.

Point of View
