Bhubaneswar, March 27 (NationPress) With strict security measures and road blockades surrounding the Odisha Assembly, a large group of Congress workers and leaders commenced their protest rally on Thursday, addressing the alleged surge in crimes against women in the state.
The Congress supporters, organized in various groups, converged towards the PMG Square area of the city.
Several prominent party figures, including Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) President Bhakta Charan Das, AICC Odisha in-charge Ajay Kumar Lalllu, and Congress Legislature Party leader Rama Chandra Kadam, are set to speak to the party members.
Subsequently, the supporters, led by influential Congress leaders, will march towards the Assembly to stage a gherao.
"This protest aims to demand justice for the state's mothers and sisters. The rise in crimes against women has escalated under the BJP administration in the past nine months. The state's progress hinges on ensuring the safety and security of women. Our fight for women's safety will persist both within the Assembly and on the streets until the government acknowledges our demand for the establishment of a house committee," stated Kadam.
In the meantime, Das called upon all Congress workers to maintain a non-violent approach and conduct the protest in a peaceful manner.
He also alleged that the police had prevented numerous Congress supporters from various districts from reaching Bhubaneswar to join the protest.
Das urged the police to permit the Congress workers' entry into Bhubaneswar.
Notably, the Commissionerate police have deployed 80 platoons of police personnel at significant locations in the city to prevent any disturbances during the rally.
Since March 7, during the second phase of the Assembly session, opposition Congress members have been protesting, calling for the formation of a house committee to probe the reported increase in atrocities against women in the state.
Following ongoing disruptions caused by Congress MLAs in the Assembly, Speaker Surama Padhy suspended them on Tuesday and Wednesday for their disorderly conduct.
