Bhubaneswar, April 9 (NationPress) The Odisha Commissionerate Police has initiated legal action against approximately 5,000 Congress members and leaders due to their involvement in a violent clash with law enforcement at Gandhi Marg in the Lower PMG region of Bhubaneswar during a protest rally held by the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) on March 27.

Among the Congress figures implicated are OPCC president Bhakta Charan Das, Congress MLAs Tara Prasad Bahinipati, Ramesh Chandra Jena, Rama Chandra Kadam, Pabitra Saunta, Sagar Charan Das, Prafulla Chandra Pradhan, Mangu Khila, CS Raazen Ekka, and former MLAs Md Mokim and Suresh Chandra Routray.

The rally was organized to encircle the Odisha Vidhan Sabha in response to the perceived increase in incidents of atrocities against women in the state under the governance of the BJP.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagmohan Meena informed IANS that three individuals have been apprehended thus far in connection with the incident.

Moreover, the DCP stated that further action will be taken against protestors identified as participants in the violence as investigations progress.

The FIR indicates that on March 27, Congress members traveled to Gandhi Marg in procession from various areas of Bhubaneswar City.

A gathering was held at Gandhi Marg, where the Congress leaders allegedly delivered anti-government and provocative speeches.

The police reported that inspired by these speeches, the demonstrators became aggressive, attempting to breach the police barricade to approach the state Assembly.

“They resorted to violence, throwing eggs, stones, tomatoes, and plastic chairs at the police,” an official stated.

The police initially cautioned the Congress workers against taking the law into their own hands, but their warnings were disregarded.

Consequently, the authorities employed water cannons and tear gas to disperse the violent protestors.

On the same day, over 50 individuals, including several police personnel, were injured during the confrontation between Congress supporters and security forces amid the protest rally concerning women’s safety in Bhubaneswar.
