Karnataka Congress demands CBI probe into Ram Mandir Trust funds row
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) on Tuesday, 7 July passed five resolutions at its General Body meeting at Palace Grounds, Bengaluru, including a demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged financial irregularities at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust and a call for a ₹10,000 crore special drought relief package from the Centre for Karnataka. The meeting was chaired by KPCC President B.K. Hariprasad.
Ram Mandir Trust Allegations
In its resolution on the Ram Mandir controversy, the KPCC alleged that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union government had constituted the 11-member Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust for the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, and that the Trust had received donations worth tens of thousands of crores of rupees from the public and governments. The party alleged the Trust had failed to maintain proper accounts for fund management.
The resolution further alleged that some trustees and staff members had systematically misappropriated cash, gold, silver, and diamonds worth thousands of crores of rupees. The KPCC claimed that while certain staff members had been arrested, those allegedly responsible for the irregularities were being shielded from accountability.
Demand for CBI Probe and Resignations
The KPCC urged the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to identify all those involved and demanded a full CBI investigation, stating the alleged scam had 'shocked the nation and hurt the sentiments of millions of devotees.' The resolution alleged the controversy had brought disrepute to Lord Sri Ram and tarnished India's cultural and religious heritage.
Holding the Union government morally responsible, the KPCC demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. These are allegations made by the Congress party; the named individuals have not responded to the claims as per available information.
₹10,000 Crore Drought Relief Demand
A separate resolution urged the Centre to release a ₹10,000 crore special package to help Karnataka combat a worsening drought. The KPCC stated that deficient rainfall and monsoon failure had severely affected Kalyana Karnataka, Kittur Karnataka, and the central and southern parts of the state. Reservoirs have reportedly dried up, farmers have been unable to sow, and drinking water shortages have emerged in several villages, affecting both people and livestock. Rising unemployment has also forced many residents to migrate in search of livelihoods, according to the resolution.
Other Resolutions and Key Attendees
The remaining resolutions congratulated AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge on his election to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka and his appointment as Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. The party also congratulated former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on his appointment as a member of the Congress Working Committee, B.K. Hariprasad on assuming charge as KPCC President, and D.K. Shivakumar on becoming Chief Minister of Karnataka.
The meeting was attended by AICC General Secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, Congress Working Committee member and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, former Chief Minister M. Veerappa Moily, KPCC Working Presidents G.C. Chandrashekar, Vasanth Kumar, and Manjunath Bhandary, along with ministers, MLAs, and senior party leaders.
With the Ram Mandir Trust controversy deepening, the Congress's push for a CBI investigation signals an escalating political confrontation ahead of upcoming state and national electoral cycles.
