New Delhi, July 11 (NationPress) In the midst of a political upheaval regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral roll, the BJP has vehemently criticized the Congress party for its hypocritical and unscrupulous behavior, highlighting its double-faced duplicity regarding the connection between Aadhaar and voter identity cards.
Amit Malviya, who heads the BJP's National Information and Technology Department, took to X to share archived videos from Parliament sessions and screenshots of news articles featuring comments from Congress leaders such as Randeep Singh Surjewala, Shashi Tharoor, and Manish Tewari, all of whom opposed the Modi government's initiative from 2021 to voluntarily link Voter ID with Aadhaar.
Malviya criticized Congress and its ally, the Rashtriya Janata Dal, for resisting the Election Commission of India's recent decision to exclude Aadhaar from voter verification during the ongoing SIR in Bihar.
He remarked, "The Congress has consistently been a party of convenience—unprincipled, unscrupulous, and motivated solely by political gain."
He pointed out that in 2022, a prominent Congress member had petitioned the Supreme Court, arguing that linking Aadhaar to Voter ID was unconstitutional and infringed on citizens' Fundamental Rights. Just a few years later, he noted, Rahul Gandhi's Congress is now brazenly demanding that the Election Commission recognize Aadhaar as valid proof of citizenship. This blatant hypocrisy exposes the Congress's double-faced duplicity to the public," the BJP leader commented.
He also referenced a news article from July 24, 2022, in which Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala contested the law linking Aadhaar to voter ID in the Supreme Court.
Labeling Congress as shameless, Malviya stated, "In 2021, when the Modi government proposed the voluntary linking of Voter IDs with Aadhaar, Congress protested, stating, 'Aadhaar is not proof of Citizenship—it only demonstrates residency! If Aadhaar is being utilized for voting, it grants voting rights to non-citizens!'"
He continued, "Now, in 2025, the same Congress party demands that the Election Commission accept Aadhaar as proof of citizenship during the Special Intensive Revision in Bihar, potentially allowing illegal migrants and non-citizens to be added to the voter roll! Shamelessness has a new name: Congress."
Earlier, the BJP leader had also cited the established legal position of the Supreme Court on this matter.
"There has been excessive and misplaced debate surrounding the Special Intensive Revision of Bihar's electoral roll and the push to recognize Aadhaar as valid proof of citizenship, a necessary criterion for voter enrollment. However, Aadhaar is not deemed valid proof of citizenship due to its design, structure, and legal definition," he stated.
"In its 2018 ruling, the Supreme Court of India clearly articulated: Aadhaar does not confer citizenship; it serves solely as a means of identifying residents," he concluded.
