Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, Feb 7 (NationPress) The Gujarat Congress ignited a political firestorm on Saturday by raising concerns against the upcoming performance of the play I Am Nathuram Godse at Hemu Gadhvi Hall in Rajkot.
The party accused the production of attempting to legitimize or glorify the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi and demanded clarity from the officials regarding the permission granted for the play.
Parthivrajsinh Kathwadia, spokesperson for the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee, stated that the party would staunchly oppose the performance, emphasizing that Gujarat, with its profound historical and ideological connections to Mahatma Gandhi, must not allow platforms that portray his murderer in a favorable light.
“Gandhi is the moral backbone of our nation and of Gujarat. There is no circumstance under which Nathuram Godse should be depicted as a hero,” he asserted.
Questioning the approval process, Kathwadia urged the state government to explain how the play received permission. “What criteria were used to permit its staging in Gujarat? Who reviewed its content before giving the green light?” he queried, insisting that the authorities must be held accountable for their choices.
Highlighting Gandhi’s global legacy, the Congress leader noted that India consistently honors his memory as a universal symbol of peace and non-violence.
“When international leaders visit India, they are taken to Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial as a beacon of peace. How can there be simultaneous efforts to evoke sympathy for the individual who took his life?” Kathwadia remarked.
He referred to Godse as “the first terrorist of independent India” and claimed that such cultural productions are part of a broader scheme to distort history and diminish Mahatma Gandhi's ideological impact.
“This issue transcends mere art. It concerns the message conveyed to society and future generations,” he continued.
Kathwadia announced that Congress would file a formal protest and organize opposition against similar events if they arise in the future.
“We will stand against any attempt to misuse cultural venues to rewrite history or offend public sentiment,” he declared.
The controversy escalated upon reports that the same play had been previously performed in other cities across Gujarat, including Surat, Vadodara, and Bhavnagar.
The Congress party questioned whether permissions were also given for those performances and requested a comprehensive response from the relevant authorities.
