Kozhikode, Nov 29 (NationPress) Kanathil Jameela, a prominent leader of the CPI-M and the current MLA representing Koyilandy, sadly passed away on Saturday in a private hospital located in Kozhikode. The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, expressed his sorrow over her death, honoring Jameela as a dynamic and joyful leader who was instrumental in fortifying the state's women's movement.

Jameela was 59 years old and had been receiving treatment for cancer.

In a message posted on X, Chief Minister Vijayan stated: “The passing of Comrade Kanathil Jameela, our elected representative from Koyilandy, is profoundly saddening. A dynamic and joyful leader of the people, she represented our party’s proud heritage of fostering a robust women’s movement. Her dedicated efforts across various local bodies enhanced our model of decentralized governance. Her loss is a significant blow to our party, the women’s movement, and society as a whole. I stand in solidarity with her family, friends, and comrades during this time of grief.”

Despite her health challenges, Jameela maintained her connection with the community, returning to the public sphere whenever her condition permitted.

Entering the Kerala Legislative Assembly during the 2021 elections, Jameela's journey from a homemaker to one of Kerala’s most esteemed grassroots leaders is truly remarkable.

Originally from the rural region of Kuttiady, she relocated to Thalakkulathur after marriage.

Her political journey began unexpectedly in 1995 when she successfully contested and secured a seat in the Thalakkulathur Grama Panchayat. That same year, she was elected Panchayat President, marking the inception of her public career.

Her political growth was closely linked to Kerala’s transformative People’s Planning Movement, which decentralized governance and empowered local entities. This movement not only encouraged women's participation in planning and executing local development but also nurtured strong female leaders.

Jameela distinguished herself as a leader, showcasing her commitment through grassroots engagement and participatory planning. By actively involving herself in community development, she became a symbol of how local self-governance can elevate ordinary citizens into effective public representatives.

Her journey from Panchayat President to block-level leadership and ultimately to the State Assembly epitomizes the strength of decentralized democracy and women's empowerment in Kerala.

Even while confronting her illness, Jameela kept close ties with her constituency and her party, demonstrating unwavering dedication to public service. Renowned for her simplicity, approachability, and grassroots connection, she leaves a lasting legacy rooted in community governance and women’s empowerment.

Kanathil Jameela is survived by her husband, K. Abdurahman, and their two children.

Her departure signifies the conclusion of an inspiring chapter in Kerala’s political narrative—one that began in a humble village home and rose steadily to the halls of the Legislative Assembly.
