Chandigarh, Sep 9 (NationPress) Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema expressed strong disapproval of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's financial relief package for the state, labeling it a “cruel joke” for those affected by floods.
He criticized the Central government for the “insignificant and disrespectful” flood relief package that was revealed by Prime Minister Modi following an aerial survey.
Finance Minister Cheema stated that the aid of Rs 1,600 crore is a cruel joke on the citizens of Punjab who have experienced catastrophic losses in what has been termed the worst floods in four decades.
“The Prime Minister’s visit was merely a photo opportunity. After weeks of our state confronting an extraordinary natural disaster, the Prime Minister has finally responded with an aid package that is utterly inadequate. The losses endured by our farmers, laborers, impoverished individuals, businesses, and infrastructure amount to tens of thousands of crores, and the Union government has the nerve to propose a meager sum of Rs 1,600 crore,” Cheema asserted.
Emphasizing the severe plight of the poor whose homes were obliterated and the financial strain felt by laborers, the Finance Minister remarked that numerous individuals are now exposed to the elements, with laborers earning nothing.
He underscored the extensive devastation faced by the impoverished, including widespread destruction of crops, residences, and public infrastructure. The state government has already declared compensation of Rs 20,000 per acre for farmers and Rs 4 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives.
“We are exerting every effort to provide assistance, but the magnitude of the catastrophe demands considerable and immediate support from the Centre. The Prime Minister's announcement is a severe injustice to the people of Punjab,” he stated.
He reiterated the state’s persistent request for the disbursement of pending funds from the Centre, which includes GST compensation and other dues that collectively amount to over Rs 60,000 crore.
“The Prime Minister has not even acknowledged the letter sent by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann requesting the release of these funds. Rather than offering essential assistance, the Centre is politicizing a humanitarian crisis,” he concluded.
