Imphal, April 23 (NationPress) The local government in Manipur's Kamjong district announced an indefinite curfew on Wednesday in two villages within the Sahamphung sub-division following the destruction of several homes by unidentified armed groups, as reported by officials.
The District Magistrate of Kamjong, Rangnamei Rang Peter, stated that the Superintendent of Police indicated that residences in both Gampal and Haiyang villages were set ablaze by unknown assailants, thereby posing a serious threat to law and order and potentially disturbing peace and public tranquility in the region.
Under Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023, an order was issued prohibiting individuals from leaving their homes or engaging in any activities that might disrupt the current law and order situation until further notice.
According to police officials, the incident occurred while many residents of Gampal and Haiyang were occupied in their fields. Several Kuki-Zo-Hmar tribal organizations have condemned the arson.
Five tribal organizations, including the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), released a joint statement condemning these brutal attacks, asserting that they have instilled fear among innocent Kuki civilians and further endangered the already precarious peace and stability in the area.
"The perpetrators of these cowardly acts have caused significant trauma, devastated homes and properties, and disrupted the lives of many who are already bearing the burdens of ongoing ethnic tensions," the statement noted.
Furthermore, it highlighted that Wednesday's attack represents another alarming incident in the systematic targeting of the Kuki-Zo people, who continue to endure violence, displacement, and discrimination.
"It is profoundly concerning that such acts of terror continue to occur under the supervision of the government of India, which has consistently failed to fulfill its constitutional obligation to maintain law and order, especially during a crisis that necessitates urgent, sensitive, and equitable intervention," the statement added.
The organizations called for the immediate rehabilitation of the affected families and the provision of adequate and neutral security for these two villages.
