Curfew Imposed in Kangpokpi, Manipur Amidst Naga-Kuki Tensions; Assam Rifles Camp Attacked in Kamjong

Imphal, Jan 11 (NationPress) A curfew has been imposed in a sub-division of Manipur's Kangpokpi district on Saturday due to escalating tensions between the Naga and Kuki-Zo communities. In a different incident occurring in the Kamjong district, a mob on Saturday attacked and destroyed a makeshift camp belonging to the Assam Rifles, according to officials.

Authorities in Imphal reported that tensions have been simmering for three days in the Kangchup Geljang sub-division of Kangpokpi following disputes over territory between the villagers of the Naga-dominated Konsakhul village and the Kuki-Zo inhabited Leilon Vaiphei village.

The residents of Konsakhul have laid claim to Leilon Vaiphei village as part of their territory, but this assertion has been vehemently contested by those from Leilon Vaiphei.

Amid the territorial disagreements, accusations surfaced regarding the assault of a Naga woman by a few individuals on January 7.

As tensions escalated in the region, minor clashes occurred between the villagers of the two communities, prompting District Magistrate Mahesh Chaudhari to enforce an indefinite public curfew in the sub-division under the BNSS, 2023.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported during these altercations.

The District Magistrate's order restricts movement in and around the areas adjacent to Konsakhul and Leilon Vaiphei villages, effective immediately until further notice.

In a separate event, a mob in Kamjong district destroyed a makeshift camp of the Assam Rifles on Saturday, allegedly due to grievances over harassment and restrictions on timber transportation for house construction.

According to police reports, the unrest began when Assam Rifles personnel reportedly enforced restrictions on transporting timber intended for construction in Kasom Khullen village. To disperse the crowd, Assam Rifles personnel utilized tear gas and fired warning shots into the air, though no injuries were reported during this incident.
