Police Officers Injured During Violent Mob Assault on SP's Office in Kangpokpi, Manipur

Imphal, Jan 4 (NationPress) A violent crowd, accompanied by armed individuals, targeted the office of the Superintendent of Police in Kangpokpi district of Manipur on Friday night in response to the ongoing deployment of Central forces in the area, according to officials. Many police officers sustained injuries during the incident.

A police representative from Imphal stated that following the mob's attack, security personnel employed cane-charges and utilized tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

"Details are still forthcoming. Initial reports indicate that numerous police personnel were hurt during the mob assault," the official remarked.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants hurled stones and various objects toward the SP's office as a demonstration of their resentment regarding the sustained presence of central forces in the tribal-dominated villages.

Several vehicles parked within the SP office compound were reportedly damaged.

Local media sources indicated that Kangpokpi district SP Manoj Prabhakar, an officer of the Indian Police Service, was also injured in the mob's aggression, although this has not been officially confirmed.

Law enforcement officials mentioned that the mob has been advocating for the removal of the CRPF and BSF from Saibol village, which lies within Kangpokpi and Imphal East districts.

Numerous Kuki-Zo organizations have been protesting against the alleged use of cane-charges on tribal women by security forces on December 31 in Saibol village.

Meanwhile, Lt Gen Abhijit S. Pendharkar, GOC of Spear Corps, along with other senior military officials, met with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Friday.

An official from Raj Bhavan stated that the Army officers briefed the Governor on the existing security situation in the state.

The officers informed the Governor about the security arrangements in various regions of the state, particularly in the border areas.

A Defence spokesperson revealed that Lt Gen Pendharkar visited an Assam Rifles Battalion, stationed in Noney district of Manipur, on Friday to assess the current security landscape in the area.

The Army officers updated the GOC regarding the operational readiness of the forces.

He commended all personnel for their commitment and professionalism.

The GOC also engaged with the ex-servicemen community, expressing appreciation for their significant contributions to nation-building.

A police statement issued late Friday indicated that a protest rally organized by CoTU (the Committee on Tribal Unity) turned violent as they demanded the withdrawal of Central Security Forces from Saibol village.

The statement noted that violent protesters attacked the office of the Superintendent of Police in Kangpokpi by throwing stones and petrol bombs.

“Security Forces responded to the mob and utilized appropriate force to disperse them, bringing the situation under control. In this incident, Manoj Prabhakar, SP of Kangpokpi District, sustained injuries, and some vehicles were also damaged. The SP has received necessary medical treatment and is currently leading the joint security forces in managing the situation,” the statement added.

Large contingents of security forces have been deployed to address the situation. The conditions are now under control and are being closely monitored.
