Enhanced Security Measures Following Attack on SP's Office in Kangpokpi District, Manipur

Imphal, Jan 4 (NationPress) After a mob attack on the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) in the mountainous Kangpokpi district of Manipur, a significant presence of security forces has been established in the region, officials reported on Saturday.

A police spokesperson in Imphal indicated that a substantial number of both central and state security forces, including Manipur police commandos, have been assigned to the Kangpokpi district headquarters and surrounding areas.

The attack on the SP’s office occurred on Friday evening when a mob, accompanied by armed individuals, protested the deployment of Central forces in the district, escalating into violence that persisted into the night.

Multiple tribal organizations have been vocal about their demands for the withdrawal of central forces from areas predominantly inhabited by tribes, accusing them of acting in a biased manner.

A police statement noted that a protest rally organized by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) on Friday evening, which aimed at the withdrawal of Central security forces, turned chaotic.

The protesters reportedly assaulted the SP’s office by throwing stones and using petrol bombs.

In response, the security forces took action against the mob, employing sufficient force to disperse the crowd and restore order, according to police.

During the incident, Manoj Prabhakar, the SP of Kangpokpi District, sustained injuries, and several vehicles were damaged.

The SP has received appropriate medical attention and is currently well and leading the joint security forces in addressing the ongoing situation,” the statement added.

Large contingents of security forces have been deployed to manage the situation, which is now under control and under continuous observation.

The District Magistrate of Kangpokpi issued an order directing the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) to closely monitor the situation, collaborate with local law enforcement, and ensure the safety of residents in their jurisdiction.

The DM emphasized, “Given the current law and order situation within your jurisdiction, it is crucial to maintain vigilant oversight on developments and ensure a swift and effective administrative response as needed.

You are also instructed not to leave the headquarters without prior authorization until further notice.”

In the meantime, a police official reported that the mob is demanding the removal of the CRPF and BSF from Saibol village, located in Kangpokpi near the Imphal East district.

Numerous Kuki-Zo organizations are also protesting against the alleged use of force against tribal women by security personnel on December 31 in Saibol village.
