Cyclone Chido Claims 14 Lives and Inflicts Extensive Damage on Mayotte

Paris, Dec 15 (NationPress) Cyclone Chido, which impacted the island of Mayotte on Saturday, has tragically claimed at least 14 lives and inflicted substantial damage on the island, as reported by French media on Sunday.

According to Ambdilwahedou Soumaila, the mayor of Mamoudzou, the capital of Mayotte, nine individuals are in critical condition and 246 others are receiving treatment for less severe injuries at the Mayotte Hospital Center, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

He stated, "The roads are completely cut off, making travel nearly impossible ... We are in urgent need of water and food, and these supplies must be transported," he conveyed to local media.

In a statement, the prefect of Reunion, where the majority of the support efforts are being organized, mentioned that "additional resources will arrive throughout the week, potentially totaling 700 civil security personnel."

French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is scheduled to visit Mayotte this evening. After an interministerial crisis meeting, he indicated that it "will likely take several days" to accurately assess the human toll.

Situated in the northern Mozambique Channel of the Indian Ocean, Mayotte is an overseas department and region, as well as a single territorial collectivity of France. It is located off the southeastern coast of Africa, positioned between northwestern Madagascar and northeastern Mozambique.
