Chennai, June 8 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) on Sunday refuted Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s assertion that the DMK-led coalition would secure over 200 seats in the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, labeling it a “daydream”.

While attending the wedding of Arakkonam MLA S. Ravi’s son, Palaniswami remarked, “Stalin is daydreaming when he claims his alliance will capture more than 200 Assembly seats in the next elections. In reality, it will be the AIADMK-led coalition that will form the next government in Tamil Nadu post-2026.”

He emphasized that numerous political parties would soon align with the AIADMK, enhancing its strength further.

Referring to the achievements of the AIADMK during its previous term from 2016 to 2021, Palaniswami credited the establishment of six new districts in Tamil Nadu, including Ranipet and Tirupattur, which were created from Vellore.

He noted that the creation of these new administrative units allowed for better attention to underdeveloped areas.

The former Chief Minister also highlighted several educational initiatives from the AIADMK era, such as the setup of 11 new medical colleges, six law colleges, along with additional engineering and agricultural colleges.

“Conversely, the DMK government is merely rebranding our programs under new titles by placing their stickers on them,” he contended.

Palaniswami challenged the DMK’s 2021 election commitment to construct check dams worth Rs 2,000 crore across Tamil Nadu. “How many check dams has the DMK government completed so far? Each monsoon, excess rainwater merely flows into the sea due to ineffective planning,” he stated.

He further criticized the DMK for discontinuing welfare initiatives implemented by the AIADMK, like Amma Clinics and the Kudimaramathu initiative, which enabled farmers to desilt local water bodies. “This not only enhanced water storage areas but also provided nutrient-rich silt for agricultural lands,” he added.

Palaniswami also pointed out the AIADMK’s implementation of 7.5 percent horizontal reservation for government school students in medical admissions as a significant achievement. “Thanks to this policy, 3,460 government school students have been able to pursue medicine since the 2020-21 academic year,” he remarked.

The gathering was attended by former Minister and Tirupattur district in-charge K.C. Veeramani, along with numerous AIADMK officials and party members.

Point of View

It’s clear that the political dynamics in Tamil Nadu are shifting. Palaniswami's strong rebuttal of Stalin's claims signifies a pivotal moment as the AIADMK seeks to rejuvenate its base and assert its influence ahead of the 2026 elections. The discourse reflects broader themes of accountability and governance, with both parties vying for public trust amid promises and past performances.
