New Delhi, June 8 (NationPress) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended three insurgents connected to a lethal assault on security personnel that resulted in the deaths of two police commandos and injuries to multiple others in Manipur last year, according to an official announcement made on Sunday.
The trio, along with their accomplices, had plotted, collaborated, and executed the attack on an Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) post and security forces in Moreh of Tengnoupal district on January 17, 2024.
Included among the accused is Thangminlen Mate, a local from Tengnoupal district and a member of the Kuki Inpi Tengnoupal insurgent group.
He played a crucial role in planning and conducting the assault.
Apprehended on May 19, 2025, in Silchar, Assam, he was presented before the NIA Court in Guwahati, which ordered his custody until May 28.
He is currently held in Guwahati's Central Jail.
The other suspects, Kamginthang Gangte, affiliated with the Kuki National Army, and Hentinthang Kipgen alias Thangneo Kipgen, associated with the Village Volunteers in Churachandpur district, were detained in Imphal on June 6.
They were brought before the Duty Magistrate, who granted a transit remand until June 9 for their transfer to the NIA Special Court in Guwahati.
The duo was part of the group that executed the deadly assault.
Last month, the NIA filed charges against three additional suspects related to the trafficking and supply of illegal firearms, ammunition, and explosives to insurgents in the northeastern state of Mizoram.
The three accused, identified as Vanlaldailova, Lalmuanpuia, and Lalrinchhunga alias Albert, are from Mizoram.
They were arrested on December 6, 2024, following the recovery of arms, ammunition, and explosive materials during searches at their homes.
Investigations indicated that all three had significant roles in facilitating terrorist activities and escalating ethnic violence in Manipur through arms distribution to insurgent factions.
They had also raised funds with the awareness that the proceeds would be utilized for acquiring weapons for terrorist acts, thereby jeopardizing public order and national integrity, according to the NIA.
