A 17-year-old girl was gang-raped by three men who falsely identified themselves as police officers at a park near Kalkaji Mandir in New Delhi on Monday evening, according to officials. One of the three accused, identified as Asif, was subsequently apprehended following a police encounter and sustained a gunshot wound in the process.

How the Incident Unfolded

According to officials, the survivor and her friend visited Kalkaji Mandir at approximately 7 pm on Monday to offer prayers. The two then moved to a nearby park at around 7:30 pm, where three men — aged approximately 25 to 30 years — approached them, claiming to be police personnel. The accused allegedly used this false identity to threaten the two before committing the assault on the minor.

A PCR call reporting the rape was received at 8:45 pm, following which a police team reached the site near Kalkaji Mandir and the ISKCON Temple. During the subsequent operation, accused Asif was arrested after sustaining a gunshot wound; he is currently receiving medical attention, officials said. Efforts to locate the remaining two accused are ongoing.

Investigation Under Way

An investigation has been launched, with police actively pursuing the other two suspects. No further identifications of the at-large accused have been officially confirmed. Authorities have not yet disclosed the motive beyond the opportunistic nature of the assault, according to the available information.

Part of a Disturbing Pattern in Delhi

This incident is the latest in a series of sexual assault cases reported in the national capital within a matter of days. On 16 September, a sixth-grade student was allegedly lured into a shop in Sadar Bazaar, restrained with her hands and legs tied, and sexually assaulted. The accused in that case, a 56-year-old shopkeeper identified as Maqsood, was arrested and sent to judicial custody on the same day, according to officials.

Earlier, on 13 September, police recovered the severely decomposed body of a teenage girl near a field along Kushak Road in the Swaroop Nagar area of North Delhi. According to police, she had been gang-raped and murdered by four persons — including three juveniles — who subsequently abandoned her body in an open area. The condition of the body was reportedly such that authorities could not initially determine the victim's gender; parts of the body had been scavenged by stray dogs. All four accused were subsequently arrested following a thorough investigation.

Spotlight on Delhi's Law and Order

The three incidents within roughly ten days have drawn renewed attention to women's safety in the capital. Critics and civil society groups argue that Delhi's public spaces — parks, markets, and streets — remain unsafe for women and minors, particularly in the evening hours. The recurrence of cases in which perpetrators exploit positions of trust or authority, such as impersonating police, is seen as a compounding factor in the erosion of public confidence.

With two accused still at large in the Kalkaji Mandir case, police have indicated they are working to identify and detain the remaining suspects; further developments in all three cases are expected as investigations continue.
