Delhi Police seize 765.6 kg ganja worth ₹2.30 crore, bust interstate drug ring
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Delhi Police have dismantled an interstate drug trafficking syndicate, seizing 765.6 kg of ganja valued at approximately ₹2.30 crore and arresting four accused following a multi-state surveillance operation that spanned more than 36 hours, officials confirmed on Monday, 13 July. The operation was conducted under the Centre's Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan by the Anti-Narcotics Squad of Delhi's Outer District.
How the Operation Unfolded
On 20 June, the Anti-Narcotics Squad received specific intelligence about narcotics movement in the area. Inspector Virender Sindhu, acting under the supervision of the ACP (Operations), constituted a dedicated raiding team. The team intercepted the first accused, Ashok Kumar, a 40-year-old resident of Shakurpur, Delhi, near Madhuban Chowk in Pitampura, recovering 22.610 kg of ganja from two bags he was carrying. A case under Section 20(C) of the NDPS Act was subsequently registered at Rani Bagh Police Station.
During interrogation, Kumar allegedly disclosed involvement in transporting a larger consignment of 285 kg of ganja by truck. He had also previously been arrested in a separate case registered under Sections 20(C)/25 of the NDPS Act at Farrukh Nagar Police Station in Gurugram, Haryana, where 285 kg of ganja had been recovered.
Cross-State Surveillance Leads to Ludhiana
Further interrogation pointed investigators to a supplier allegedly operating under the alias 'Ajeet Singh', who was identified through financial investigation and technical surveillance as Inderjeet Ray, a resident of Patna, Bihar. Police teams began tracking Ray from 9 July, monitoring his movements continuously for over 36 hours across Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab. He was apprehended along with his associate, Nitish Kumar, from a hotel in Ludhiana, Punjab on 10 July.
743 kg Recovered from Ludhiana Godown
During interrogation, the accused allegedly disclosed that a large consignment had been stored in a rented godown in Jamalpur, Ludhiana. Police raided the premises and recovered 743 kg of ganja. A fourth accused, Dharmender Kumar, a resident of Jamalpur and an alleged associate of Inderjeet Ray, was arrested at the site. Officials confirmed the total seizure stood at 765.6 kg, with an estimated market value of ₹2.30 crore.
Investigation Ongoing
According to officials, the rented godown was allegedly being used as a staging point to distribute narcotics to locations across Haryana and Punjab. Police said further investigation is underway to identify additional members of the network and trace the full supply and distribution chain of the seized contraband. This operation is part of a broader national push under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan to disrupt cross-state narcotics pipelines.
