New Delhi, Sep 8 (NationPress) Delhi Industries Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced on Monday that the Delhi government plans to introduce a ₹50-crore skill development initiative aimed at unemployed youth through the Delhi Khadi and Village Industries Board (DKVIB).
During a meeting at the Delhi Secretariat, Sirsa highlighted that the skilling initiative is designed to equip unemployed youth and artisans with training, ultimately aiming to generate employment while preserving traditional crafts.
According to the scheme, a minimum of 50% of the available positions will be allocated to SC/ST/OBC/EWS groups and women. The programme will provide toolkits to 2,500 artisans and facilitate exposure visits for 500 individuals. Additionally, it aims to establish training centers in each district of Delhi.
By the fiscal year 2025-26, the initiative is expected to train over 13,900 participants with the support of organizations such as NSDC, NIESBUD, and various NGOs. Sirsa emphasized that the plan ensures 20% self-employment and 50% paid job placements.
The curriculum will encompass practical skills in areas like apparel merchandising, logistics, IT support, self-employed tailoring, and Khadi fashion design. Trainees will also receive daily lessons on AI, digital tools, marketing, and soft skills. “The objective is to merge traditional crafts with AI and digital training, which will aid the Board in creating job opportunities and developing a model that promotes self-sufficiency, in alignment with PM Modi’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision,” he stated.
The initiative features a significant Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP) lasting up to 10 days, merging practical upskilling with basic business knowledge to transform small crafts into successful enterprises, guided by Ministry of MSME regulations.
Collaborating with entities like NSDC, NIESBUD, and ATDC, the programme will adhere to the norms set by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, ensuring quality training that aligns with India’s self-reliance goals and provides artisans and youth the necessary tools to thrive in both traditional crafts and emerging markets.
“This initiative complements larger national schemes such as the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) and the Interest Subsidy Eligibility Certification from KVIC, integrating additional support for loans and grants,” the Minister added.
The programme will build on recent initiatives, including a fashion show organized by DKVIB, showcasing Vedic styles with unique textiles from various states.
Looking ahead to 2026-27, the Delhi government aims to expand the scheme with a focus on training an additional 5,750 youth and 8,625 artisans, along with new courses and funding through CSR and federal resources.
