Delhi, Aug 1 (NationPress) In an effort to raise awareness and prepare citizens for the potential threats of earthquakes and other disasters, a large-scale disaster management mock drill took place across 11 districts in Delhi on Friday.
This exercise, conducted at over 50 sites including markets, schools, and hospitals, aims to enhance the region's emergency response readiness for significant disasters like earthquakes and chemical spills.
Officials noted that this drill is part of a multi-agency initiative known as 'Exercise Suraksha Chakra', which is designed to improve emergency response collaboration in the National Capital Region, encompassing 18 districts from Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. In Delhi, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) stated that the mock drill would simulate a major earthquake scenario to assess real-time readiness, inter-agency cooperation, and public response strategies.
At approximately 9:00 a.m., a simulated earthquake event was initiated throughout the capital. Coordinated by the DDMA, the drill activated response teams, evacuations, and containment operations at schools, hospitals, markets, and high-risk areas.
This operation forms part of a broader four-day national disaster preparedness exercise organized by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
A mock earthquake drill was specifically conducted at a sewing center in Block 10 of Geeta Colony. Following a simulated emergency call, teams from the Geeta Colony Police, Traffic Police, medical personnel, ambulance services, and the SDM promptly responded and executed mock rescue and relief operations.
Officials indicated that although isolated mock drills have occurred in Delhi previously, this is the first time all 11 districts have engaged in a synchronized and coordinated disaster simulation.
Given the capital's seismic vulnerability, it ranks as one of the most hazardous zones in India. The drill included a dual-crisis scenario featuring a severe earthquake followed by hazardous chemical leaks in critical regions.
NDMA officials affirmed that the drill serves to evaluate the capability of the national capital to manage disaster situations. They emphasized that such exercises are vital for the populace, particularly since Delhi is classified under Seismic Zone IV.
