New Delhi, April 25 (NationPress) In a bid to rejuvenate the Yamuna and other aquatic channels in the capital, the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is leading the formulation of an Urban River Management Plan (URMP) for Delhi, an official reported on Friday.
This initiative aims to transform Delhi's rivers into essential ecosystems, fostering sustainable and inclusive management practices in accordance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, as stated by an official from the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
The URMP will act as a blueprint for other major cities, embodying the concept of resilient and river-sensitive urban growth, according to the statement.
The NMCG has also sanctioned an annual master plan aimed at embedding river-sensitive planning within 145 developing cities.
This master plan for the River Cities Alliance (RCA) outlines a year-round framework for capacity-building initiatives, knowledge sharing, technical tool development, expert advice, and the establishment of Urban River Management Plans (URMPs).
Initiated in 2021, the RCA is a groundbreaking initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Jal Shakti alongside the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
This year, the emphasis will be on promoting the integration of river considerations into municipal master plans through the organization of River-Sensitive Master Planning (RSMP) training programs across various states, as mentioned in the statement.
Additionally, to assist in the creation of Urban River Management Plans (URMPs), the NMCG will offer training sessions, including onboarding programs specifically for RCA cities in Tamil Nadu, with more sessions planned for other states.
The upcoming year is also set to witness the formulation of 25 additional URMPs as part of the initial phase in a broader mission to develop 60 such plans across India over the next two to three years.
Backed by the World Bank, this initiative represents a significant advancement in enhancing river-conscious urban governance. Steering Committees have already been established in states such as Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal to aid in plan creation and oversee implementation, as per the statement.
