New Delhi, March 20 (NationPress) India's aviation authority, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has instructed airline operators to steer clear of various airspaces in West Asia due to the escalating tensions related to the US-Israel-Iran conflict. This directive aims to enhance safety through effective contingency planning as part of comprehensive risk assessments.

The DGCA has specifically requested airlines to avoid the airspace over Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Flights over Oman and Saudi Arabia may still be allowed, provided certain conditions are met, according to a notification from the DGCA.

The aviation authority has noted a heightened risk for civil aviation due to recent military actions by the United States and Israel targeting sites in Iran. Iran's subsequent retaliatory actions have further intensified this threat, presenting significant dangers to flight operations.

Airlines have also been cautioned against flying below FL320 (32,000 feet) in designated regions of Saudi Arabia and Oman.

The DGCA highlighted the importance of conducting thorough safety risk assessments and developing robust contingency plans to handle potential disruptions, including necessary rerouting and diversions.

This advisory is effective immediately and will remain in place until March 28, unless revised in light of new developments.

Furthermore, the DGCA has instructed airlines to refrain from operating in the identified airspaces at any flight levels or altitudes.

"Operations to airports in the affected region, where international airlines are still operating, must be supported by comprehensive contingency planning to cover all conceivable scenarios," stated the DGCA.

Additionally, airlines are required to ensure that their flight crews are informed of the latest NOTAMs (Notice to Airmen), which provide current updates on airspace restrictions and operational conditions.

On Thursday, several airlines issued travel advisories for passengers departing from Delhi and other locations, warning of potential disruptions due to adverse weather conditions.

IndiGo indicated that departures and arrivals in Delhi and Bengaluru might experience minor delays due to forecasted thundershowers, while Air India noted ongoing rain and strong winds affecting Delhi and parts of northern India.

Point of View

I recognize the DGCA's proactive approach in addressing the escalating risks associated with the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The focus on safety through comprehensive assessments and contingency planning is crucial for the aviation industry and travelers alike.
