New Delhi, Dec 22 (NationPress) In response to an engine shutdown incident on Air India’s Delhi-Mumbai flight, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced on Monday that an investigation will be conducted.

Earlier today, the Air India B777-300ER aircraft, en route to Mumbai, had to return to Delhi shortly after take-off due to a technical issue. Fortunately, the aircraft landed safely in Delhi.

According to the regulator, “the AIC 887 (Delhi-Mumbai) experienced an air turnback because, during flap retraction post take-off, the flight crew detected low oil pressure in Engine No. 2 (Right-Hand engine).”

Shortly after take-off, the oil pressure for the engine plummeted to zero. Following standard protocol, the crew shut down Engine No. 2, allowing for a safe landing back in Delhi.

The DGCA stated that “inspection and rectification processes are currently underway.”

“The Permanent Investigation Board of the Airline will investigate the incident under the oversight of the Director of Air Safety (NR), DGCA,” it added.

In response, Air India confirmed that immediate assistance is being provided to affected passengers, and “alternative arrangements have been established to ensure they reach their destinations promptly.”

Amid recent flight disruptions, Air India has enhanced its preparations to reduce passenger inconvenience during the upcoming fog season, introducing measures such as CAT III B crew rostering, the deployment of CAT III B-certified aircraft, and comprehensive airport readiness.

The CAT III B crew roster and certified aircraft involve assigning specially trained flight crews and using aircraft capable of landing in low visibility conditions.

Additionally, Air India has initiated its ‘Fog Care’ program to assist passengers facing delays or schedule changes due to uncontrollable circumstances. This initiative allows for proactive identification of flights likely to be impacted by fog based on weather forecasts, ensuring passengers are promptly notified of any changes to their schedules.

The DGCA has indicated that the official fog season will be from December 10, 2025, to February 10, 2026.
