Dhanbad, Aug 18 (NationPress) A significant case of land subsidence took place in the Jogta police station vicinity of Dhanbad district, Jharkhand on Monday, leading to a house being completely destroyed and causing alarm among local residents.
The home, owned by a woman named Kalyani Devi, was entirely flattened. Fortunately, just moments before the structure crumbled, the family sensed vibrations and a loud noise, allowing them to escape.
“The entire house fell apart with a loud bang. We fled just in time. All our possessions – grains, clothing, household items – are now trapped beneath the rubble. We have lost everything we had,” Devi lamented, tears in her eyes.
She has called for prompt assistance, including shelter, food for her children, and compensation from the authorities and Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL).
The family mentioned that they had built the house using borrowed funds, which are now lost with the destruction.
The subsidence also resulted in large fissures in the ground and created deep holes in various areas, instilling fear in the community.
Local resident Indradev Bhuiyan criticized both the administration and BCCL for their negligence. “Despite numerous complaints, no actions have been taken. Such incidents occur every year,” he claimed.
Following the incident, BCCL representatives arrived at the location but declined to respond to media inquiries, reportedly displaying irritation.
Land subsidence is an ongoing issue in Dhanbad, where underground mine fires have persisted for over 70 years in coalfield regions.
Each year, numerous incidents occur, damaging homes, displacing families, and endangering lives. Yet, millions continue to inhabit these perilous regions, often with minimal support or compensation.
This latest incident has once again raised serious concerns about the safety of residents in these areas, as no definitive measures have been implemented to avert such disasters in the future.
