Dhanbad, Dec 16 (NationPress) A tragic fire incident claimed the lives of two individuals and left six others injured in a three-storey residential building located in Vikas Nagar, within the Saraidhela police station area of Dhanbad district, Jharkhand, shortly after midnight on Monday, according to officials on Tuesday.

The victims have been identified as Prashant Kumar, aged 22, also known as Golu, and his 70-year-old grandmother, Chintamani Devi.

Reports indicate that Prashant had recently arrived from Patna about fifteen days prior to the incident, intending to stay at his grandmother’s residence. At the time of the fire, there were 15 people inside the building—eight on the ground floor, three on the first floor, and four on the second.

The fire is believed to have started on the ground floor, quickly filling the building with thick smoke. Most of the residents were asleep when the fire broke out, leading to chaos and panic.

While some managed to escape from the upper floors, those on the ground floor were trapped by the heavy smoke.

Local residents bravely attempted to extinguish the flames and rescue those trapped inside, but their efforts were hindered by the thick smoke. The fire department was then notified.

Three fire engines arrived and worked for nearly an hour and a half to control the blaze.

Deepak Oraon, the head of the Dhanbad Fire Department, commented on the challenges faced due to the narrow lane leading to the building, which complicated access for the fire engines.

He noted that the situation might have been less dire had the main gate not been locked.

Initial investigations point to a short circuit as the likely cause of the fire. Officials reported that Chintamani Devi had gone to bed after turning on a heater in her room shortly before midnight, with the fire being noticed by other residents around 1 a.m.

Six individuals sleeping on the ground floor suffered injuries, with two in critical condition, and are currently receiving treatment at a private hospital.

The police have taken possession of the bodies for a post-mortem examination, and further investigations are ongoing.

Point of View

This incident underscores the importance of fire safety in residential areas. As we mourn the loss of life and support the injured, it is crucial that local authorities assess building safety standards to prevent such tragedies in the future.
