Chennai, Oct 11 (NationPress) Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) founder T.T.V. Dhinakaran accused AIADMK General Secretary and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami of being "desperate" to have actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approach.

While addressing the media in Tiruvannamalai, Dhinakaran pointed out that the visibility of TVK flags during Palaniswami's ongoing statewide tour clearly indicates his eagerness to align with the actor-turned-politician.

"The AIADMK leader's desperation signifies that his party is losing strength day by day. Despite his attempts, Vijay has made it very clear during his state conference in Madurai in August that any coalition in Tamil Nadu for the 2026 state elections would be spearheaded by him," he stated.

Dhinakaran noted that the desire of both leaders to head the alliance makes any partnership unrealistic.

"Either Palaniswami or Vijay must relinquish their claim to leadership — which is improbable. In my opinion, Vijay is not likely to join the Palaniswami-led NDA," he commented.

Taking a jab at Palaniswami's statements regarding loyalty towards the BJP, Dhinakaran questioned why the AIADMK exited the NDA before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections if Palaniswami was genuinely loyal to the BJP.

"He (Palaniswami) claims to be loyal because the BJP supported his government after Jayalalithaa's death in 2016. But if that is accurate, why did he abandon them during a critical election for Prime Minister Modi's re-election?" the AMMK President asked.

Defending the Tamil Nadu government's recent appeal in the Supreme Court against a CBI probe into the Karur stampede, the AMMK Chief argued that the decision aimed to uphold the morale of the state police.

"The government's position is justified. Such measures to defend the state's investigative bodies are common in other states like Kerala and Karnataka as well. It is to ensure public confidence in local law enforcement," he added.

Dhinakaran hinted that the AMMK would forge its own path ahead of the 2026 state elections, asserting that the political landscape in Tamil Nadu is rapidly evolving, with numerous regional players trying to reposition themselves.

Point of View

The interplay between regional politics and larger national alliances is critical. Dhinakaran's comments reflect the ongoing tensions within Tamil Nadu's political arena, where personal ambitions often clash with party strategies. The forthcoming elections will undoubtedly test the strength and unity of these coalitions.
