Chennai, Aug 10 (NationPress) All state-funded universities in Tamil Nadu are set to implement the National Academic Depository (NAD) DigiLocker system to securely store and manage students’ certificates in a digital format, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP).
This initiative comes in response to guidance from the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education (TNSCHE), which operates under the Higher Education Department.
The NEP encourages the use of DigiLocker and the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) to digitize academic records, facilitating smooth credit transfers between institutions.
The ABC functions as a virtual repository of credits accumulated by students throughout their academic journey, ensuring easy access and mobility.
The NAD, established by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), acts as a 24/7 online storehouse for academic awards such as degrees, provisional certificates, and mark sheets.
This system guarantees authenticity, secure storage, and convenient retrieval of documents. A senior official from the Higher Education Department stated that this initiative will enable students to access and download their digital certificates at any time, eliminating the need for physical visits to their universities.
“Currently, this scheme will be rolled out to maintain students’ records across all universities, reducing the risk of counterfeit certificates and allowing students to instantly share their credentials,” the official commented.
A senior professor from a private institution emphasized the benefits, stating, “As a government-backed service, DigiLocker provides students with immediate access to their academic records, allowing secure sharing through QR code verification, which is beneficial for higher education admissions and accessing government welfare programs.”
Employers are also expected to gain from this scheme. An HR professional from a recruitment firm in Chennai mentioned, “Private companies can connect with DigiLocker to issue and authenticate digital documents before interviews, streamlining what used to be a lengthy verification process to just a day or two.”
With the guidance of TNSCHE, Tamil Nadu's universities are anticipated to fully integrate DigiLocker into their academic frameworks, contributing to national efforts aimed at providing secure, paperless access to educational records.
