Chennai, Feb 3 (NationPress) As the election campaign for the Erode East bypoll concludes today, the ruling DMK, which has assumed control of the seat from its coalition partner Congress, is optimistic about a significant win.

The bypoll is scheduled for February 5, with the counting of votes occurring on February 8.

Led by DMK Erode district secretary and Tamil Nadu Urban Development and Housing Minister S. Muthusamy, the party's campaign involved extensive outreach to voters, including door-to-door visits alongside local MP Prakash.

Muthusamy conveyed to the press his belief that the DMK candidate in the Erode East bye-election would win with a margin of 1.2 lakh votes. The ruling party's nominee, former MLA V.C. Chandhirakumar, is competing against M.K. Seethalakshmi, the women’s wing leader of Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), after the major opposition parties, AIADMK and BJP, chose to boycott the polls.

This bypoll was necessitated by the passing of veteran Congress leader EVKS Elangovan, who had previously won the seat in the 2023 bye-election following the untimely death of his son, Thirumahan Everaa, from a heart attack on January 4, 2023.

In the prior 2023 bypoll, Elangovan achieved victory with a margin of 66,233 votes, defeating AIADMK candidate K.S. Thenarassu.

During that election, NTK's candidate, Menaka Navaneethan, received only 10,827 votes.

Despite the absence of AIADMK and BJP in this election, sources within the DMK indicated to IANS that the party is treating this contest with utmost seriousness.

DMK youth wing leader and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has been at the forefront of the campaign for V.C. Chandhirakumar.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has instructed party leaders to secure a decisive victory with a substantial majority.

Senior DMK figure and organizing secretary R.S. Bharathi refuted claims that the party was underestimating the election due to the perceived weakness of its opponent.

He stressed that the DMK has campaigned vigorously to ensure a landslide victory.

Other prominent leaders, including State PWD Minister EV Velu, have also participated actively in the campaign.

In light of recent controversies, including the Anna University sexual assault case and critiques regarding law enforcement in Tamil Nadu, the DMK aims to reinforce the notion that public support remains firmly behind the party.

An opinion poll conducted by People Studies forecasts a clear win for the DMK in the upcoming bypoll on February 5.

The survey, which involved 1,470 respondents within the constituency from January 28 to 31, revealed that 59.5% of respondents expressed their intent to vote for the DMK. 17.6% opted not to vote, while 16.7% indicated they would support the NTK.

As the campaign wraps up today, the DMK remains assured of clinching a resounding victory in the Erode East bypoll.
