Chennai, Jan 23 (NationPress) The postal voting process for the Erode (East) by-election kicked off on Thursday and will run until January 27.
This bypoll was called due to the passing of esteemed Congress leader EVKS Elangovan, who previously secured his MLA position by defeating AIADMK's K. S. Thenarassu with a hefty margin of 66,233 votes.
Interestingly, this year, both the AIADMK and BJP have chosen not to participate.
The DMK has nominated its leader and state joint secretary of the propaganda committee, V. C. Chandhirakumar, to run against Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) candidate K. Seethalakshmi.
In the last by-election, NTK candidate Menaka Navaneethan garnered only 10,827 votes.
Despite the lack of formidable opponents such as the AIADMK and BJP, the DMK is striving hard to achieve a decisive victory.
Leading the campaign in the constituency is DMK youth wing leader and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.
The NTK, headed by actor-turned-politician Seeman, commenced its campaign in Erode East on January 21, following the assignment of the 'Mike' symbol by Tamil Nadu Electoral Officer Manish Narnaware on January 20.
The NTK stands as the sole significant political contender against the DMK, as the AIADMK, BJP, and DMDK have withdrawn from the election.
NTK candidate K. Seethalakshmi expressed assurance, stating, "Since obtaining the 'Mike' symbol, we have escalated our campaign in the constituency, aiming for electoral victory. The symbol has already gained public recognition, facilitating our campaigning efforts."
The NTK has organized special teams, and its members are engaging in door-to-door campaigns to ensure their success.
A total of 46 candidates are vying for the Erode East by-election, following the disqualification of an independent candidate's nomination earlier on Tuesday.
Among these 46 candidates, there are two recognized political parties and 14 registered political parties in the race.
The by-election for the constituency is set for February 5, with vote counting scheduled for February 8.
