Erode East in Tamil Nadu Scheduled for By-Election on February 5

Chennai, Jan 7 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has declared February 5 as the date for the by-election in Tamil Nadu's Erode East Assembly constituency.
The counting of the votes is scheduled for February 8.
The final day for submitting nominations will be January 17, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until January 20, as per the election authority.
This by-election for Erode East will take place simultaneously with polls in Milkhipur, Uttar Pradesh, and the Delhi Assembly.
This marks the second by-election for the Erode East Assembly seat within a span of two years. The vacancy arose following the passing of Congress veteran EVKS Elangovan on December 14, 2024.
Elangovan, who was the grandnephew of social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, previously secured this seat in a by-election held in early 2023.
He contested the by-election following the tragic death of his son, Thirumagan Everaa, who died of a heart attack in January 2023 at the age of 46.
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. K. Stalin, visited the Erode district on December 19 and 20, 2024, aiming to bolster the party's presence ahead of the upcoming by-election and the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
During this visit, CM Stalin held meetings with senior DMK officials to assess the party's performance in the 2021 Assembly elections.
As per DMK sources, CM Stalin was gathering insights on candidate selection for the Erode East by-election.
Tamil Nadu Minister and Erode South District Secretary S. Muthusamy reportedly informed the Chief Minister that, apart from EVKS Elangovan and his family, there are no significant Congress figures from Erode available to contest the seat. Muthusamy further indicated that party members are keen on having DMK candidates rather than a Congress representative for this election.
The DMK has ambitious goals, aiming to secure 200 out of 234 Assembly seats in the upcoming 2026 elections.
