Chennai, Jan 20 (NationPress) With the Erode East by-election set for February 5, the DMK is making every effort to achieve a considerable victory margin.

This bypoll was triggered by the death of prominent Congress figure E.V.K.S. Elangovan, who had become an MLA after the unexpected passing of his son, Thirumahan Everaa, from a heart attack on January 4, 2023.

In the previous 2023 by-election, Elangovan triumphed over AIADMK's K.S. Thenarassu by a significant margin of 66,233 votes. However, this time, both the AIADMK and BJP have chosen to abstain from the contest.

The DMK has nominated its leader and state joint secretary of the propaganda committee, V.C. Chandhirakumar, to face off against K. Seethalakshmi from the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK).

Notably, in the 2023 by-election, NTK's representative, Menaka Navaneethan, garnered only 10,827 votes. Despite the lack of formidable competitors like the AIADMK and BJP, the DMK is fully committed to ensuring a decisive win.

The DMK youth wing leader and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin is at the forefront of the election efforts in Erode East.

In the meantime, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has directed the party's leadership to strive for a substantial victory margin in this seat. Senior DMK figure and party organizing secretary R.S. Bharathi stressed that the party is taking the election seriously, rejecting the notion that they may ease their efforts due to weak opposition.

DMK Erode district secretary and local minister S. Muthusamy is spearheading the ground campaign in this urban constituency. Together with local district and division secretaries and MP Prakash, he has been conducting door-to-door outreach with candidate V.C. Chandhirakumar.

In just a week since their candidate's announcement, the local DMK unit has reached 10 of the over 30 wards in the entirely urban constituency. Senior DMK figure and state PWD minister E.V. Velu is scheduled to visit the area later today to evaluate the situation.

The DMK views this by-election as a chance to strengthen its support base, particularly in light of controversies like the Anna University sexual assault case and claims of worsening law and order in Tamil Nadu.

While Chief Minister Stalin's involvement in the campaign is still unverified, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and other senior ministers are anticipated to lead the efforts. The recent success in the Vikravandi by-election under Udhayanidhi Stalin's guidance has bolstered the party's confidence in clinching Erode East with a significant majority. R.S. Bharathi reiterated, “We will not take this bypoll lightly.”
