Aizawl, Feb 2 (NationPress) In spite of rigorous border surveillance, the illicit trade of drugs from Myanmar into North-east India continues. The security forces confiscated drugs valued at Rs 10.80 crore and apprehended four drug traffickers in Mizoram, as reported by officials on Sunday.
A representative from the defence unit stated that the Assam Rifles, in collaboration with the Excise and Narcotics Department officials, conducted a coordinated raid and seized 3.33 kg of highly addictive Methamphetamine tablets, valued at Rs 9.99 crore, on the Ngur-Bulfek road in Champhai district on Saturday night. Additionally, three smugglers were arrested while transporting Methamphetamine tablets, commonly referred to as Yaba or party tablets.
In a separate operation, para-military forces, along with Excise and Narcotics Department officials, recovered 116.81 grams of heroin worth Rs 81.76 lakh from Thingkah in Lawngtlai district on Saturday. One drug peddler was also apprehended for illicitly transporting these drugs.
The arrested drug traffickers and the confiscated drugs, smuggled from Myanmar, have been handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department for further legal proceedings. Just four days prior, the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police, in a joint initiative, seized heroin and highly addictive Methamphetamine tablets worth over Rs 7.64 crore and arrested a drug smuggler at Zokhawthar in the bordering Champhai district.
While six districts in Mizoram—Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip—share an unfenced border of 510 km with Myanmar's Chin state, the mountainous Champhai district has emerged as a key hotspot for the smuggling of a variety of drugs, weapons, and other contraband.
Heroin and highly addictive Methamphetamine tablets are frequently trafficked into the northeastern states of India from Myanmar, which has an unfenced border extending 1,643 km with four northeastern states: Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km), and Mizoram (510 km).
