New Delhi, Oct 26 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a notification to all media outlets and broadcasters, emphasizing the critical importance of complying with the “silence period” and the ban on exit polls as the Bihar Assembly elections and by-elections approach next month.
According to the established schedule, voting for the Bihar Assembly elections will take place in two phases: on November 6 and November 11.
Referencing Section 126(1)(b) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the ECI reiterated that no election-related content may be aired on television, radio, or any similar platforms during the 48 hours leading up to the conclusion of polling in each phase.
During this “silence period”, channels and networks are barred from broadcasting any material that could sway voter behavior or impact the electoral chances of any political party or candidate.
This encompasses discussions, debates, or viewpoints that may be interpreted as campaign propaganda. Furthermore, under Section 126A of the same Act, the execution and announcement of exit polls are strictly prohibited from 7 a.m. on November 6 until 6:30 p.m. on November 11.
This restriction applies to all forms of media, including print, electronic, and digital formats. The ECI has stressed that violations of these regulations could result in imprisonment for up to two years, fines, or both.
The Election Commission has called on all media organizations to fully adhere to these directives to preserve the integrity and fairness of the electoral process.
In a press release, the poll panel urged broadcasters, journalists, and digital platforms to maintain the “spirit of free and fair elections” by refraining from any material that might bias or enhance electoral prospects during this restricted timeframe.
Importantly, on Friday, the poll panel mandated that all polling stations for the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar and the eight assembly constituency by-elections be equipped with Assured Minimum Facilities (AMFs) and voter assistance initiatives to guarantee a smooth and dignified voting experience for all voters.
In announcing this in a press release, the ECI stated that the directive aims to foster a voter-friendly environment and uphold accessibility standards across all polling stations.
