Is Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Guilty of Serious Penal Offence?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 9 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has vehemently criticized the extremely irresponsible and unethical actions of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, asserting that she is guilty of a serious penal offence for allegedly trespassing into private property amid an ED investigation and reportedly threatening the investigation team.
At a press briefing from the BJP headquarters, party MP Ravi Shankar Prasad launched a scathing attack on the Bengal Chief Minister and her government, accusing her of disregarding constitutional governance norms and suggesting that her actions are a pressure tactic to protect herself and her party members from legal repercussions.
"The actions of the Chief Minister are not only unethical and irresponsible but also unconstitutional, bringing shame to the entire governance framework. The question arises - what is Mamata's connection to that consultancy firm? Numerous suspicious circumstances surround this, indicating she was attempting to cover up something sensitive that implicates her and her party," Prasad stated.
This incident marks the first time in Independent India that a sitting Chief Minister has breached the security perimeter of ED officials during a search at a private residence related to an alleged money laundering case, and subsequently left with documents.
"A sitting Chief Minister breached a private property where the ED was conducting searches related to money laundering, intimidated the ED officials, and departed with documents from the scene. The ED's actions were based on complaints regarding extensive money laundering involving the Prateek Jain-led consultancy firm," he emphasized to the media.
Prasad also questioned why the sitting Chief Minister would oppose raids conducted by an investigative agency targeting a private firm accused of money laundering, recalling previous instances where the Trinamool Congress leader attempted to obstruct investigations by central agencies.
"This is not an isolated incident; Mamata has a history of directly interfering with CBI and ED actions. From confronting CBI teams in the Sharda scam to obstructing central investigations into the Sandeshkhali incident and the notorious RG Kar rape case, Mamata's interference is evident everywhere," Prasad asserted.
The ED's search at the I-PAC chief's residence on Thursday sparked significant political turmoil in the state, which is set to hold Assembly elections this year.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress have accused the BJP of conducting a witch-hunt against her party, while the BJP has countered by labeling her as a destructor of democracy.
