Can Bengal Become Bangladesh? VHP, BJP Criticize CM Banerjee
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 10 (NationPress) Political tensions escalated on Saturday following comments made by leaders from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) directed at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. They accused her of hindering central agencies and supposedly catering to a vote bank with Bangladeshi origins.
The strong reactions arose in light of Mamata Banerjee's recent demonstration against what she described as excessive interference from constitutional bodies within the state.
VHP's National Spokesperson, Vinod Bansal, launched a direct assault on the Chief Minister, asserting, “The efforts that Mamata ji is undertaking to transform Bengal into Bangladesh will never succeed.”
“Initially, she obstructed the Income Tax department, followed by the CBI. And whenever any agency attempts to act, she absconds with files and documents. What kind of mentality is that?” Bansal questioned, claiming that the state administration is undermining the rule of law.
Additionally, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya criticized CM Banerjee for her inaction regarding the murders of Hindus in Bangladesh, suggesting that her electoral interests take precedence.
“Mamata Banerjee displays no concern for the murders of Hindus in Bangladesh. Leading up to the Assembly elections, her vote bank, which encompasses individuals of Bangladeshi descent, has received financial backing from both domestic and foreign entities. She is determined to block any investigation from proceeding,” Somaiya asserted.
He further emphasized that the BJP would firmly oppose illegal immigration, stating, “The Bharatiya Janata Party will not accept any compromises regarding the repatriation of Bangladeshi nationals.”
Meanwhile, responding to the opposition's claims, Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Anand Dubey accused the Central Government of selectively employing investigative agencies against governments not aligned with the BJP.
“The vehicles of the ED and CBI only head towards non-BJP states. They never seem to head towards Gujarat or Maharashtra,” Dubey stated, alleging the political misuse of central agencies.
The renewed political clash follows CM Banerjee's protest on Friday against an alleged raid related to the Election Commission, where she accused the Centre of intimidating state officials and misusing constitutional institutions.
