New Delhi, Sep 17 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) revealed on Wednesday a significant redesign of the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) ballot paper, which aims to enhance readability and improve voter convenience.
This upgraded format will, for the first time, feature colour photographs of candidates and will be implemented starting with the upcoming Bihar elections.
As per the Commission, this initiative is in line with revised guidelines established under Rule 49B of the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961.
This decision is part of 28 initiatives launched by the poll body in the last six months to make electoral processes more streamlined and voter-friendly.
The new design stipulates that “serial numbers of candidates/NOTA will be displayed in the international form of Indian numerals, with a font size of 30 in bold for clarity,” as mentioned in the press release from the poll panel.
“To maintain uniformity, all candidates’/NOTA names will be printed in the same font style and size that is large enough for easy readability,” it added.
The ballot papers will adhere to standardized printing specifications and will be produced on 70 GSM paper.
For Assembly elections, a distinctive pink-coloured paper, with defined RGB values, will be utilized to aid voters and polling officials in easily identifying them.
“The EVM Ballot Papers will utilize 70 GSM paper. For Assembly Elections, pink-coloured paper with specified RGB values shall be employed,” it stated.
Notably, these new ballot papers will first be used in Bihar before being adopted by other states in future elections.
Officials anticipate that this initiative will greatly enhance the voting experience, particularly for elderly and less literate voters, by minimizing confusion and ensuring greater transparency.
This announcement comes just weeks prior to the crucial Bihar Assembly elections.
This effort is perceived as a significant move towards improving readability and voter convenience.
