Kolkata, Dec 31 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP, Abhishek Banerjee, fiercely criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday in response to his statements regarding infiltration in West Bengal, dubbing him the "country's ineffective Union Home Minister".
Banerjee departed for Delhi on Tuesday afternoon to meet Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, intending to protest the ongoing hearings concerning claims and objections related to the draft voters' list in West Bengal.
Before his departure, Banerjee addressed the media at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, where he did not hold back in his criticism of the Union Home Minister.
He referenced recent comments made by BJP Lok Sabha member Jagannath Sarkar from the Ranaghat constituency in Nadia district, and BJP Rajya Sabha member Ananta Maharaj, targeting Shah.
"Recently, Ananta Maharaj referred to Amit Shah as a Pakistani by origin, labeling him an infiltrator. Simultaneously, Jagannath Sarkar claimed that if the BJP gains power in West Bengal after the 2026 Assembly elections, the international borders with Bangladesh would disappear. Despite these statements, neither MP has faced a show-cause notice from BJP leadership. As Union Home Minister, Shah is accountable for border safety," Banerjee stated.
The Trinamool leader pointed out that a recent terror attack in Delhi occurred just four days before the concluded Bihar Assembly elections.
"Four terrorists killed 26 tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir shortly before that. The Border Security Force, responsible for border security, is under the Union Home Ministry's jurisdiction. Additionally, the Delhi Police falls under the same ministry. What actions has the Union Home Minister taken to address these issues? He has proven to be a failed Union Home Minister since India’s Independence," Banerjee added.
He dismissed Shah's previous assurances to voters from the Matua community and other religious refugees regarding their voting rights under the Citizenship Amendment Act.
"While the Union Home Minister reassures the Matuas in West Bengal of their voting rights, BJP's Lok Sabha representative Shantanu Thakur insists that the deletion of Matuas from the voters' list is inconsequential. This is a clear instance of divisive politics," Banerjee concluded.
