This election cycle is necessitated by the impending expiration of terms for eight members of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) hailing from the two states, as noted in the ECI's statement.
In Assam, two seats will become vacant due to the retirement of Mission Ranjan Das and Birendra Prasad Baishya, both of whom will step down on June 14.
Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, six Rajya Sabha members are set to retire on July 24. The retiring members include Anbumani Ramadoss, M. Shanmugam, N. Chandrasegharan, M. Mohamed Abdulla, P. Wilson, and Vaiko.
The election notification will be issued on June 2, with the deadline for filing nominations set for June 9.
Nomination scrutiny is scheduled for June 10, and the last day to withdraw candidatures will be June 12.
The ECI has mandated that only designated violet sketch pens of a specific type, supplied by the Returning Officer, be used for marking preferences on the ballot paper, with strict prohibitions against other writing instruments.
To uphold the integrity of the election process, the ECI will appoint observers to monitor the proceedings closely. Furthermore, it has stipulated that all Covid-19 guidelines, as periodically updated on its website, must be adhered to throughout the electoral process.
Vote counting is set to commence immediately following the conclusion of polling on June 19, with the entire electoral process expected to wrap up by June 23, as per the Commission's announcement.
Additionally, the Election Commission has also scheduled by-elections for five assembly seats across four states to take place on June 19.
