Kolkata, April 17 (NationPress) In a significant development on Friday evening, the Election Commission of India (ECI) declared the suspension of three booth-level officers (BLOs) involved in the electoral process for the upcoming two-phase assembly elections in West Bengal later this month.

The ECI also instructed the state administration to commence departmental proceedings against the five BLOs implicated and file first information reports (FIRs) against them.

The officials facing disciplinary action include Tapan Kumar Saha, Avijit Dey, and Kumarjit Dutta, all from the North 24 Parganas district.

They are accused of participating in campaigns for the ruling Trinamool Congress, which contravenes the Commission’s regulations that prohibit electoral officers from engaging in any political activities on behalf of any political party.

Previously, all three received show-cause notices. The Commission found Saha's and Dey's responses unsatisfactory, while Dutta refused to acknowledge the notice, leading to the initiation of disciplinary proceedings.

On the same night, the ECI also ordered the removal of Murli Dhar Sharma, the Commissioner of Bidhannagar City Police, replacing him with Tripurari Atharva, who was instructed to assume his new role by 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Initially, the Commission had decided to transfer Sharma to Tamil Nadu as a police observer, but this order was later stayed, allowing him to retain his position as the Bidhannagar Police Commissioner. However, the previous transfer orders for 13 other Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to Tamil Nadu and Kerala remained unchanged.

The two-phase assembly elections in West Bengal are scheduled for April 23 and April 29, with counting and results set to be announced on May 4.

Point of View

I observe that the recent suspensions by the ECI reflect a stringent approach towards electoral fairness in West Bengal. Such actions underscore the importance of impartiality among electoral officers, especially in politically charged environments.
