New Delhi, Sep 11 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to host a one-day workshop on September 12 for media and social media nodal officers from Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) offices across all 36 states and union territories.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar will inaugurate the workshop in New Delhi, alongside Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, as announced by the Commission in a statement released on Thursday.
This initiative aims to enhance the communication framework of the Commission to guarantee the prompt dissemination of accurate, rule-based, and constitutional information regarding elections. This comes at a time of rising concerns regarding the proliferation of misinformation about electoral processes.
“The workshop seeks to highlight that elections in India are conducted in accordance with the Constitution and stresses the significance of communicating legal, factual, and rule-based information promptly and in a coordinated manner,” said the ECI.
Recently, the poll body has raised alarms about attempts to disseminate misleading claims concerning voter registration, electoral rolls, and the integrity of voting systems.
The Commission has emphasized that proactive and coordinated communication is vital to address these challenges.
“Given the recent increase in misinformation that aims to mislead the public about electoral processes, the workshop also intends to fortify the communication ecosystem of CEO offices in States/UTs to counter misleading information with factual responses,” the poll body stated.
This training will also build on insights from two previous orientation programs conducted this year at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) on April 9 and June 5.
These sessions were tailored to equip officers with media engagement strategies and fact-checking tools.
The workshop underscores the poll body's broader aim to boost transparency, uphold the credibility of electoral institutions, and ensure citizens receive precise information amidst an ever-evolving information landscape.
