ED files PMLA charge sheet against FIITJEE, directors over ₹85.79 crore fee fraud
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) Lucknow Zonal Office has filed a charge sheet before a Special PMLA Court in Ghaziabad against FIITJEE Limited and its directors, Dinesh Kumar Goel and Monila Goel, in a money laundering case linked to the alleged misappropriation of fees collected from students. The charge sheet, filed on Thursday, 16 October 2026, seeks conviction of the accused and confiscation of properties worth ₹71.88 crore seized and provisionally attached during the investigation.
Background and FIR Basis
The ED launched its probe on the basis of four FIRs registered by police in Noida and Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, and Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) — corresponding to Sections 406, 420, 120B and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. According to those FIRs, FIITJEE allegedly collected between ₹2.8 lakh and ₹3.5 lakh per student in advance for coaching programmes lasting two to four years, including preparation for competitive examinations such as the JEE, on the assurance that the courses would be completed.
What the ED Alleged
The agency alleged that faculty members left due to unpaid salaries, and several coaching centres subsequently shut abruptly without prior notice. Despite this, the management allegedly continued enrolling new students — including for programmes scheduled to run until March 2029 — while reportedly being aware that it would not be able to deliver the courses.
The ED investigation found that FIITJEE abruptly closed 32 centres between May 2024 and February 2025, affecting 14,411 enrolled students who had already paid for coaching. A total of ₹85.79 crore in fees allegedly retained and misappropriated has been identified as proceeds of crime under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Director Salaries Under Scrutiny
The investigation also revealed that Dinesh Kumar Goel and Monila Goel received a combined ₹24.92 crore as salary from FY 2022-23 onwards. According to the ED, Dinesh Kumar Goel drew approximately ₹56 lakh per month, while Monila Goel received more than ₹25 lakh per month. Critically, the agency alleged these payments continued even as salaries of other employees were delayed or remained unpaid and coaching centres were shutting down.
Searches, Seizures and Attachment
The ED had earlier conducted searches at seven premises on 24 April 2025, during which it seized ₹10 lakh in cash and jewellery valued at ₹4.86 crore. It subsequently provisionally attached properties worth ₹66.92 crore on 9 October 2026 under the PMLA. Separately, Noida Police has also filed a charge sheet naming both directors as accused, based on statements from around 300 victims, coaching centre operators, and other witnesses, alongside fee receipts and documentary evidence.
What Happens Next
The ED has stated that further investigation is underway. The case now moves to trial before the Special PMLA Court in Ghaziabad, where the agency will press for conviction and confiscation of the attached assets. For the thousands of affected students and their families, the legal proceedings represent the clearest path yet toward accountability — though recovery of fees paid remains uncertain at this stage.
