Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kochi, Feb 18 (NationPress) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken the step to freeze assets valued at Rs 39 lakh belonging to Malayalam actor Jayasurya amid investigations into the alleged Save Box online auction app fraud case.
The actor previously served as the brand ambassador for the company, accused of deceiving investors through a digital bidding platform.
This action is part of broader directives from the Central government, urging investigative bodies to ramp up efforts against online platforms implicated in defrauding the public.
These instructions also call for accountability from celebrities endorsing such ventures for financial gain if these platforms are later determined to be fraudulent.
To date, the ED has interrogated Jayasurya on two occasions regarding this matter.
Investigators uncovered that nearly Rs 1 crore was transferred from the account of the main accused, Sadiq Rahim, a resident of Thrissur who was arrested in 2023, to the bank accounts of Jayasurya and his wife, Saritha.
The agency has indicated that Jayasurya appears on the list of beneficiaries of funds allegedly amassed through the fraudulent activities.
In his initial statement, Jayasurya contended that the funds received were payment for his role as a brand ambassador.
However, the ED is conducting further investigation into his financial records and contractual agreements. He has been requested to provide comprehensive documentation of his financial interactions with the company and has received a notice to return for additional questioning.
The Save Box app had advertised that users could acquire electronic goods and other items at reduced prices via an online auction system by purchasing virtual coins.
Marketed as India’s first betting app, the platform was launched at an event inaugurated by Jayasurya.
Police investigations commenced in 2023 after complaints surfaced indicating that Sadiq had defrauded nearly 100 individuals out of significant sums by promising franchise opportunities under the Save Box brand. Subsequent inquiries unveiled suspected large-scale financial transactions, leading the ED to initiate a parallel investigation under money laundering statutes. Authorities are also assessing whether further personalities from the film industry linked to the accused might come under scrutiny as the investigation evolves.
