Kolkata, Feb 3 (NationPress) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) intensified its operations in West Bengal's West Burdwan district on Tuesday, linked to a coal and sand smuggling investigation, as remarkable scenes played out at the residence of businessman Rajesh Bansal in Jamuria.

According to sources from the ED, officials from the State Bank of India (SBI) arrived at Bansal's residence carrying bags and were subsequently observed leaving with three of them.

Reports indicate that a total of Rs 65 lakh has been seized from the location, and this figure may exceed Rs 1 crore. Bansal reportedly could not furnish adequate explanations regarding the origin of the cash.

The raids initiated at approximately 6:30 am when three ED vehicles made their way to Jamuria from Kolkata. Searches were conducted at the residence of another businessman, Ramesh, located in the Punjabi More area near Jamuria market, along with the homes of his sons, Sumit Bansal and Amit Bansal. It remains unverified what documents or items were confiscated.

Additionally, ED teams searched a hardware store and a warehouse at Punjabi More, as well as a shop named Bansal Hardware in Jamuria Hattala. The residence of Manoranjan Mandal, the Officer-in-Charge of Budbud Police Station, was also raided. Mandal is currently under investigation.

Simultaneous searches took place in Nabagram in Pandaveshwar and Durgapur.

Sources suggest that multiple factories acquire coal through both legal and illegal means while evading direct financial transactions.

Bansal's trading company allegedly served as a middleman, offering rented accounts for coal transactions. The ED is currently examining the magnitude of these dealings.

These raids follow last month's operations at the residence and office of Pratik Jain, head of the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC). That operation ignited a political uproar when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the site and accused the ED of seizing her party's election strategy documents under the pretense of investigation.

Point of View

It’s crucial to emphasize the importance of transparency and accountability in financial dealings. The ongoing ED investigation highlights the need for stringent measures against corruption and illegal activities. NationPress stands firmly in support of efforts aimed at uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served.
