Varanasi, Jan 18 (NationPress) Eight FIRs have been filed in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh following the emergence of purported AI-generated images and misleading assertions concerning the redevelopment initiatives at Manikarnika Ghat. Police authorities reported that these cases were registered after questionable visuals and posts, believed to be manipulated, started circulating online, attracting significant scrutiny and backlash.
The complaints specifically target eight individuals and various social media handles accused of disseminating false imagery and inaccurate information regarding the ongoing beautification efforts at Manikarnika Ghat.
As per the police's statements, the distorted images and misleading content shared on the social media platform X contradicted the actual facts surrounding the redevelopment activities at Manikarnika Ghat.
Authorities alleged that some visuals misrepresented Hindu deities in a troubling manner, aimed at inciting religious sentiments, spreading falsehoods, and stirring public unrest.
In an interview with IANS, ACP Atul Anjan remarked, "Numerous deceptive posts and images regarding the ongoing operations at Manikarnika Ghat have been widely circulated."
He cautioned that anyone found responsible for posting such material on social media in the future would encounter severe repercussions under legal statutes.
Additionally, the FIRs include names of leaders affiliated with the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party.
A complaint was lodged at the Chowk police station, where the complainant asserted that his organization has been engaged in enhancing cremation facilities and beautifying Manikarnika Ghat since November 15, 2025.
According to the complaint, an X handle user disseminated AI-generated and misleading visuals late on January 16, presenting distorted information about the redevelopment project, misleading Hindu devotees and fostering community discontent.
The police noted that the posts garnered a flood of objectionable comments and shares, heightening tensions further.
Officials have indicated that stringent measures will persist against individuals propagating rumors on social media.
Legal actions are being initiated not only against the implicated X handle users but also against those who reshared and commented on the misleading content.
This controversy arises amid ongoing redevelopment work at the historic cremation site, a project that has already faced protests from local residents concerned about potential damage to the area's heritage.
