Chennai, Dec 30 (NationPress) As the countdown begins for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated the process of notifying more than 12 lakh voters statewide, requesting additional documentation to confirm their eligibility.
This action is a component of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls aimed at enhancing accuracy and transparency.
Officials reported that the draft electoral roll was released on December 19 following the completion of enumeration and verification.
During this review, approximately 97.37 lakh voters were removed from the rolls, including individuals who are deceased, those who have relocated, or instances of duplicate entries.
Following the release of the draft roll, the Election Commission commenced the process of sending notices to voters whose information necessitates further confirmation.
A total of 12,43,363 voters will receive notices across the state requesting additional documentation to validate their eligibility.
Chennai district has the highest number of notices, with 2,37,619 voters being notified, followed by Tiruvallur with 1,85,987, and Chengalpattu with 63,373.
In Kancheepuram, 56,479 voters will be notified, while Tiruchirappalli will see 53,146 notices issued.
Approximately 46,000 notices will be dispatched in both Cuddalore and Erode districts.
Election officials have confirmed that each notice will include a unique identification number to promote transparency and effective monitoring of the verification process.
Once a notice is issued, the acknowledgment details will be uploaded to the Booth Level Officer (BLO) application for real-time tracking. Voters receiving notices must present themselves before the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer on the designated date and submit one of 13 approved documents, including a birth certificate, educational certificate, permanent residence certificate, passport, or other recognized identity documents.
The submitted documentation will be verified by the Electoral Registration Officer or the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer before a final decision is made in each case.
The Election Commission has stated that the notice issuance and document verification process will persist until February 10, with the final electoral roll to be published on February 17 after all verifications are completed.
Additionally, applications for inclusion, deletion, or correction in the voter list will remain open until February 18.
So far, the commission has received 7,28,432 applications through special camps and online channels, showcasing substantial public engagement in the revision process.
