Is a New Star Emerging in English Cricket? Vaughan Applauds Bethell's Tenacious Century at SCG
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Sydney, Jan 7 (NationPress) Former England captain Michael Vaughan has praised Jacob Bethell for his resilient century during the concluding Test of the current Ashes series at the Sydney Cricket Ground, labeling the 22-year-old as a budding star in English cricket.
Bethell achieved his first Test century off 162 deliveries. At just 22 years and 78 days old, he became the second youngest player to score an Ashes century in the 21st century, only behind former England captain Alastair Cook, who accomplished this in 2006 at the age of 21.
The ex-skipper Vaughan took to X to commend Bethell’s skill and style while appreciating the young player’s poise under pressure.
“A new star has emerged here at the SCG. The rhythm, technique, and elegance of Jacob Bethell today serve as a model for the future of England’s Test batsmen,” Vaughan shared on X.
By the end of Day Four, Bethell stood alone as England's key player in their second innings, remaining unbeaten at 142. The visitors managed a lead of 119 runs but lost eight wickets as they surpassed the 300-run milestone.
Vaughan has recently voiced criticism of the England setup as the team edges towards another defeat in Australia.
Ben Stokes’ squad has already lost the Ashes, and the pressure is intensifying on captain Stokes, head coach Brendon McCullum, and managing director of cricket Rob Key.
The former cricketer believes that England’s much-celebrated Bazball philosophy, while occasionally entertaining, has not delivered when it was most crucial.
“We know that at the conclusion of Ashes tours, especially after two attempts to win the Ashes, there are usually personnel changes. If this management continues, they obviously need to shift and change. They must transform the culture within the team. They seem to have established a cult around how this team plays and communicates. Much of it is nonsensical. That needs to be altered,” Vaughan stated on Fox Cricket.
“They haven’t secured a significant series win, either at home or abroad. This team has triumphed in Pakistan and New Zealand, but victories in those nations do not etch one’s name in history,” he added.
