New Delhi, Aug 2 (NationPress) Michael Vaughan has openly criticized England's choice to include Jacob Bethell in their lineup for the Oval Test, emphasizing that the young all-rounder has participated in very limited cricket this summer. Bethell was among four alterations made by the hosts for the series' concluding match and was designated as the team's only spinner.
Despite being given a crucial position, Bethell bowled just two overs in the first innings and scored a mere six runs with the bat on Day 2. Although the 21-year-old had shown promise during England's tour of New Zealand last year, his experience in red-ball cricket this season has been restricted to just one first-class match, with the majority of his appearances being in white-ball formats.
"It has been an epic. It really has been a brilliant series, and I think this England side, on this kind of pitch, I like the way that they played today," Vaughan remarked.
"The only thing I say is in terms of their selection, they have picked players who have been playing no cricket. And to throw them into this hotbed of international cricket in front of this number of spectators, with so many more watching, not just here but on TV screens around the globe, it isn't an easy game."
Vaughan expressed astonishment at England’s decision to select Bethell for the final match of the series, stating he finds it remarkable. He believes the team isn’t offering Bethell the best chance to thrive at the Test level.
"If it were that easy, anyone could play Test match cricket. If you're throwing a 21-year-old into this scenario on the back of one first-class match in our summer, I find that absolutely extraordinary. I don't believe you're giving a kid the best opportunity to succeed at this level," he stated.
As part of the adjustments made by England prior to the match, Bethell was included in the team alongside Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson, and Jamie Overton.
Following a challenging opening session where Mohammed Siraj and the Indian bowlers faced pressure from Ben Duckett (43 off 38) and Zak Crawley (64 off 57), the pace attack made a robust comeback, dismissing England for 247 in the final session and restricting the hosts to a slim 23-run lead.
Yashasvi Jaiswal's half-century brought India to 75/2 at stumps after losing opener KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan cheaply.
