Chennai, July 14 (NationPress) AIADMK General Secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami has publicly condemned the inaction of the ruling DMK government, calling on Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to promptly offer compensation and government employment to the families affected by custodial deaths.
In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Palaniswami drew attention to the situation of Meena, the spouse of Murugan, who reportedly died while in police custody in Sankarankoil in March 2024.
Despite a ruling from the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court mandating a job for Meena, she has yet to receive any financial support or employment from the government.
“Reports suggest that the DMK administration has failed to provide assistance to Meena, a daily wage worker, who struggles to care for her three children while earning merely Rs 300 a day,” Palaniswami remarked.
He directed his accusations towards Chief Minister Stalin, questioning the government's lack of response and action.
“Mr. Stalin, how will you address the situation of Meena, who lost her spouse due to the excessive force used by your police?”
Palaniswami also expressed concern regarding another alleged custodial death involving Ajith Kumar, a temple security guard from Thiruppuvanam. He claimed that while the state quickly provided compensation in the form of a job and land, the family deemed these benefits insufficient.
“It appears there are no definitive measures being implemented to avert custodial deaths, nor is there a genuine attempt to ensure justice or relief for the families affected,” he stated.
Palaniswami accused the DMK government of showing indifference to the pain experienced by victims’ families, labeling it as an anti-people regime.
He insisted that the government must take immediate action and fairly compensate the families of custodial death victims.
“I call upon the @mkstalin model DMK government to deliver appropriate compensation without further delay to those mourning the loss of loved ones in police custody,” the AIADMK leader concluded.
