Kolkata, Sep 22 (NationPress) Even with Sheikh Shahjahan incarcerated, reports of illegal land grabbing are resurfacing in Sandeshkhali, a cluster of islands in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Previously renowned as the “uncrowned king” of this region, Shahjahan's arrest has not deterred land disputes.
This issue of land grabbing was widespread in Sandeshkhali, with Shahjahan holding significant influence before his arrest last year for orchestrating an attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials and members of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) during a raid linked to the multi-crore PDS scam in West Bengal.
Additional allegations against Shahjahan and his associates included coercive land seizure, unlawful conversion of agricultural land into aquaculture sites by introducing saltwater, and notably, the sexual exploitation of local women.
Following his apprehension last year, reports of illegal land acquisition in Sandeshkhali diminished. However, sources indicate that as of this month, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated a renewed probe due to new land grabbing allegations involving two of Shahjahan's associates, Kamal Sardar and Prafulla Nashkar.
The latest complaint involves the illegal appropriation of 10 bighas (approximately 6.25 acres) of land by the children of the late Jadab Chandra Sarkar, a former police officer of the West Bengal Police.
Residing in Basirhat, Sarkar’s children claim that while they were away from Sandeshkhali, members of a local family, allegedly linked to the regional Trinamool Congress, unlawfully seized their property.
Based on their accusations, the CBI has commenced an investigation, and initial findings suggest there are valid grounds in the case.
Investigators are reportedly uncovering links to Shahjahan's associates, Kamal Sardar and Prafulla Nashkar.
