Delhi/Imphal, Oct 4 (NationPress) BJP MLAs and leaders from Manipur, including former state Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, are set to meet with the party’s central leaders to deliberate on the establishment of a popular government in the state.
Prior to departing for the national capital, former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh addressed the media at the Imphal International Airport, stating that a delegation is en route to Delhi to engage with central leaders.
“We aim to encourage the central leaders to assist in the formation of a new popular government, address the challenges faced by internally displaced persons (IDPs), and expedite the reopening of crucial highways,” he stated.
Accompanying Biren Singh to Delhi on Saturday are former Health and Family Welfare Minister Sapam Ranjan Singh, former Social Welfare Minister Heikham Dingo Singh, and BJP legislator Tongbram Robindro Singh.
On the same day, a faction of MLAs, including former minister Leishangthem Susindro Meitei, Thangjam Arunkumar, and Lourembam Rameshwor Meetei, all belonging to the BJP, traveled separately to Delhi from Imphal.
Additionally, Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, former minister Govindas Konthoujam, and MLAs Kongkham Robindro, Sapam Kunjakeshwor, Thounaojam Shyamkumar, and Karam Shyam are anticipated to depart Imphal on Sunday.
The state previously had a BJP-led coalition government led by former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh until President’s Rule was imposed on February 13 this year.
Singh, who resigned from the Chief Minister’s position on February 9, just four days before the imposition of President’s Rule due to ongoing ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023.
The 60-member Manipur Assembly has been placed under suspended animation following the enforcement of President’s Rule, which is set to last until 2027.
In a related note, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla is currently in New Delhi. Bhalla, a former Home Secretary, recently met with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and paid a visit to Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan at the Vice-President’s Enclave in New Delhi.
Several senior government officials, including Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel and Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home) N. Ashok Kumar, have also headed to Delhi.
The specific reasons for their visit have not been disclosed. Following the passage of statutory resolutions in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the President’s Rule was extended for an additional six months effective from August 13, 2025.
Prior to the extension of President’s Rule in Manipur, the former Chief Minister and several MLAs, along with party leaders, had urged the Central leaders in August to establish a popular government in the state.
